Choosing to participate in a clinical trial is an important personal decision. There are two main types of clinical trials involving human participants, interventional and observational.

Interventional studies are those in which the research participants are assigned to a treatment or other intervention, and their outcomes are measured.

Observational studies are those in which the research participant’s current treatment and or condition are observed and their outcomes are measured.


All clinical trials have strict guidelines about who may participate using pre determined criteria. It is important to realize that these criteria are not used to reject people personally, but to identify appropriate participants and keep them safe, Some clinical trials involve more than would normally be expected with regular treatment for an illness or condition. For this reason a clinical trial team consisting of doctors (investigators), nurses and other health care professionals monitor and keep in contact with the participants throughout and following all trials.


Participants in clinical trials not only play an important and active role in their own health care, they also gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available and help others by contributing to advancing medical and scientific research.

All research studies are conducted at no-cost to participants.

Participants may be compensated, up to a specified amount, for travel-related expenses.
